Fairgrounds Focused on Clean Water
The 22nd District Agricultural Association, in collaboration with the San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board, recently completed a state-of-the-art infrastructure upgrade to assure storm water discharged from areas of the Fairgrounds where animals are housed is in compliance with applicable clean water requirements.
This $15 million investment included converting the racetrack infield water features into holding ponds for storm water, constructing a wetlands area with a UV disinfection system to remove pollutants from storm water runoff, and building a water treatment plant that will remove residual pollutants from storm water before releasing the water back into the watershed, thus preserving the water quality in the San Dieguito Lagoon and Stevens Creek.
The 22nd DAA contracted with Barnhart-Reese to oversee construction on the project over a three-year period, phased in coordination with the annual San Diego County Fair and Del Mar Thoroughbred Club live race meets.
